Many car owners don’t like the idea of having to drill holes into the front of their brand-new car’s bumper to mount a front license plate, but thankfully there are other alternatives such as adhesive plates and magnetic mounts. If your vehicle is not manufactured with a way to mount a front license plate, then it is your responsibility to take it into your own hands My Vehicle Does Not Have a Place for the Front Plate The plates must be securely fastened to prevent swinging, clearly visible, and clearly legible. As a result, it is a law in California to have both front and fear license plates even if your vehicle is not manufactured with a front license plate mount. For passenger vehicles, two license plates are issued. Under the California Vehicle code §5200, “when two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issues, one in the front and the other in the rear”. However, oddly enough it is a growing trend for newer cars, such as a Tesla, to be manufactured without a way to mount a permanent front license plate. "How Many License Plates Am I Required To Display? Probably not at the legal height for some states but in Texas its not defined. I was originally going to grind it down so I could mount it flush but decided to angle the top so that air could still flow around it. Will have to see if it causes any thermal issues over the summer. I can post more details if anyone is interested. But that did not go so well so used a grinding wheel to shave a little off the top & bottom. I was originally going to roll the edges of the plate a bit to make it fit. I got the ideas from other BMW sites and did not see exactly what I wanted so came up with this.įor the top I used a modified Bell mount, took out center bits, secured with toggle bolts from Home Depot. The dealer was going to drill holes in the bumper. Here in Texas we are unfortunately required to display a front license plate and they have recently been enforcing it with no warnings given.
